From "The Old Wives' Tale" By Marina Warner
"The fiction is that there are three fates, who spin a woollen thread on a distaff, on a spindle, and with their fingers, on account of the threefold nature of time: the past, which is already spun and wound onto the spindle; the present, which is drawn between the spinner's fingers; and the future, which lies in the wool twined on the distaff, and which must be drawn out by the fingers of the spinner onto the spindle, as the present is drawn to the past"
This quotation comes from a story all about fate. Fate is said to play a major role in fairy tales and in life itself. Fairy tales have a past that connects to the present of the story which all leads to the future. This quotation does not only fit a fairy tale but it connects to life. Everyone has a past, present and future. They all connect and we are all living in different parts of life. Some stay in the past, while others look to the future, and some live for now. Fairy tales are stories that we choose to believe or not. We all want to have a fairy tale ending where we life happy ever after but that is looking to our futures. Living as thread that is in the spinner's fingers is the best place to be.
Fairy tales briefly talk about the past of the characters but mainly they emphasize the present. The future is never told because they simply live happily ever after. Fairy tales are all about the now. This is why they are such good tales and why people believe them for so long. Living for the now is the most important way to live.
